Prohibited and Restricted Items

Strictly Prohibited

These items may never be listed on BuyRentBorrow™ under any circumstances:

• Illegal items. Anything that is illegal to own, sell, transfer, or possess under federal, state, or local law. This includes stolen property, counterfeit goods, and items that infringe on copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property rights.
• Controlled substances. Illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia where prohibited by law, prescription medications, controlled or scheduled pharmaceuticals, supplements making medical claims without FDA approval.
• Firearms, weapons, and ammunition. Guns of any kind (loaded or unloaded, antique or modern), gun parts, magazines, ammunition, explosives, fireworks (except in jurisdictions where peer-to-peer sale is explicitly permitted), tasers and stun guns where prohibited by state or local law, and similar weapons.
• Hazardous materials. Flammable, corrosive, toxic, radioactive, or otherwise dangerous substances. Asbestos, mercury, lead-based paint, used motor oil, refrigerants, and industrial chemicals.
• Live animals. Pets, livestock, exotic animals, endangered species, or any living creature. (BRB is a goods marketplace; live-animal transactions require specialized platforms with welfare oversight.)
• Human remains, body parts, or bodily fluids. Including but not limited to bones, organs, hair (other than wigs and extensions clearly labeled as commercial hair products), and any specimens.
• Adult content and sexual material. Pornography, sexual services, sex toys (BRB does not currently support this category — may be revisited in a future age-gated category), and any content that sexualizes minors.
• Items that promote hate or violence. Materials that promote, glorify, or symbolize hate groups, terrorism, racial or ethnic discrimination, or other forms of violence against any group.
• Privacy-violating items. Hidden surveillance equipment, "spy" cameras designed to be concealed, items that enable identity theft, fake IDs, devices intended to intercept communications or compromise computer systems.
• Recalled items. Products subject to a manufacturer or government safety recall, especially where the recall identifies a health or safety hazard.
• Used cosmetics, personal hygiene items, or underwear. Items that contact skin or bodily fluids and cannot be safely transferred to another user.
• Lottery tickets, raffle tickets, gambling items. And any items intended to facilitate illegal gambling.

Restricted — Local Law May Apply

These items may be allowed in some jurisdictions and prohibited in others. You are responsible for knowing and complying with all applicable laws. We may remove listings that appear to violate local law without prior notice.

• Alcohol. Sale, rent, or transfer of alcoholic beverages requires specific licensing in every U.S. state. Not currently permitted on BRB pending a category-specific verification mechanism.
• Tobacco and vaping products. Prohibited for peer-to-peer transfer in most jurisdictions. Not currently permitted on BRB.
• Cannabis and CBD products. Legal status varies by state and locality. Not currently permitted on BRB pending category-specific compliance work.
• Knives and bladed tools. Most kitchen and utility knives are fine; switchblades, butterfly knives, and other specialty knives are restricted or illegal in many jurisdictions. List at your own risk and comply with local law.
• Motor vehicles. Listing motor vehicles requires clear ownership documentation and may be subject to state DMV requirements. Currently permitted, but transaction completion is outside the BRB platform (we do not process vehicle title transfers).
• Pesticides and household chemicals. Many consumer products are subject to EPA registration requirements when transferred. Original manufacturer packaging only; DIY-mixed substances prohibited.

Service-Specific Restrictions

Some items are allowed for some BRB transaction types but not others:

• Rentals must be returnable. Items that are consumed or destroyed by use (food, single-use products, consumables) cannot be listed as rentals — only as sales or gifts.
• Borrows require trust and a return obligation. Don't list items as borrows unless you genuinely expect them back in returnable condition.
• Gifts are one-way and final. Once accepted, a gift is the recipient's. Don't list items as gifts that you plan to ask back.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this list at any time. Material changes will be reflected in the version number and effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the platform after changes are published constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
